Hot Air Balloon Marrakech: A Complete First-Timer's Guide

Almost everyone who flies over Marrakech is doing it for the first time. This guide walks through the whole morning in order, so nothing about it is a surprise.

The morning runs on sunrise, not on the clock

Balloon flights near Marrakech launch at first light because that is when the air is most stable. Your pickup therefore moves through the year — earlier in June than in December. Expect the confirmed time the evening before rather than at the point of booking.

Pickup is from your hotel, or from the nearest vehicle-accessible point if you are staying inside the medina where cars cannot reach the door.

What happens at the launch field

You arrive in the dark. The crew unrolls the envelope, runs a cold inflation with fans, then the pilot heats the air until the balloon stands up. Watching this is genuinely one of the better parts of the morning — do not stay in the vehicle.

The briefing covers three things: how to climb into the basket, where to stand during flight, and the brace position for landing. It takes a couple of minutes and it is the only instruction you need.

What the flight feels like

There is no wind noise, because you travel with the wind. The basket is stable — this is not a fairground ride. The only loud moments are the burner bursts, which are brief and much louder on the ground than they feel once airborne.

You will see the Haouz plain, scattered villages and olive groves, and the Atlas ridge to the south. Direction and route are chosen by the pilot from the wind on the day; nobody can promise a specific overflight.

Landing and breakfast

Landings are made in an open field and the chase crew meets the basket. Depending on the wind you may land upright or with a small bump and a short slide — hence the brace position. Both are normal.

Most Marrakech operators finish with a Berber-style breakfast: msemen, bread, olives, honey, mint tea and coffee.

How to choose

Ask three questions before you pay: is the basket shared or private, is transfer included from your specific accommodation, and what happens if the weather cancels. Any operator that will not answer those clearly in writing is a bad bet.

Frequently asked

Do I need to be fit?

You need to be able to climb into the basket and stand for the duration of the flight.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes. Use a strap — anything dropped from a basket is gone.
